What is Health or Mediclaim Insurance?

Health insurance, also known as mediclaim insurance, is a type of insurance that provides financial support to the buyer of health insurance. The person who buys mediclaim insurance can also get their family covered under it. Under mediclaim insurance, if the policyholder faces any medical emergency, they receive financial coverage for the same.

For instance, if they develop an illness or are at the end of an unforeseen accident, the mediclaim insurance covers hospitalization and recovery costs, among several other expenses. Or it gives them a lump-sum payout which helps them take care of medical costs. Policyholders can choose to have the insurer to settle their medical bills with cashless health insurance.

What Does a Mediclaim Policy Cover?

A mediclaim policy’s features can vary from insurer to insurer, but typically it covers the costs of:

    • Pre and post-hospitalization care
    • In-patient hospitalization care
    • At home medical care/ Domiciliary hospitalization
    • Day care procedures for up to 500+ ailments
    • Alternative treatments (including Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, and Yoga)
    • Annual health check-up for every insured member
    • Ambulance services
    • Organ donation
    • Hospital room rent

However, a Mediclaim policy generally does not cover these instances:

    • Medical expenses arising due to self-injury/ harm
    • Medical costs arising due to alcohol/ drug abuse
    • Medical costs arising due to congenital diseases
    • Medical costs arising due to pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriage, abortion
    • Medical expenses arising due to infertility/ IVF

What Documents Do You Require to Buy Health Insurance?

To buy health insurance, you will have to submit the following documents:

    Identity and age proof like:

    • Aadhaar card
    • PAN card
    • Voter ID
    • Passport
    • Driving license
    • Birth certificate
    • 10th/12th-grade mark sheet
    • Passport-sized photographs (two)

    Address proof like:

    • Aadhaar card
    • Passport
    • PAN card
    • Voter ID
    • Ration card
    • Driving license
    • Electricity/ gas bill

You might also have to submit some medical reports if the insurer requires you to undergo mandatory medical testing. These reports inform the insurer about any underlying health issue or family medical history. Additionally, you might have to submit other documents if requested.

What is the Difference between Life and Health Insurance?

While health insurance covers you in the face of a medical emergency, life insurance protects your family against an unforeseen eventuality that affects your life or health. These include death, death due to an accident, and more. Under life insurance, your chosen family members receive guaranteed financial support in the form of a death benefit.

This death benefit is high in scope and intends to keep your cherished ones afloat despite your permanent absence. Apart from this, life insurance also provides immediate financial relief on instances that affect your ability to work and disrupt your family’s peace. These instances include critical and terminal illnesses, among others.

Moreover, between life and health insurance, life insurance plans are long-term (even up to 99 years of age), and health insurance plans are short-term (up to a maximum of three years). Ultimately, both aim to provide financial support in different forms.

    To conclude:

Health insurance is crucial to protect you and your near and dear ones from eventualities beyond your control. There are various good health insurance plans available, and you can find a health plan suited to your needs. To know more about term plan, term insurance, and long term savings visit PNB MetLife website.
